AS A 5 YEAR OLD

Dollar excelled in 2010. He burst on the scene again with memorable performances, initially winning a Heat & Final of The Famous Musselburgh Pace on the 17th /18th of July, with prizemoney approaching approximately £9,000 attached. Musselburgh Racecourse in Scotland, has hosted this fixture since at least the 1890’s and Gordon Garnett, Chairman of the British Harness Racing Club has been quoted as saying, “Musselburgh is the most important meeting of the year. There are one or maybe two persons in Wales that might say different, but it’s the oldest meeting, it’s the most difficult to win and it’s generally the richest and most prestigious to win. The Famous Musselburgh Pace takes precedence over any other race.” The horse was again competently trained by William Flanagan of the Meadow Branch Stables, Ballyboughal,Co. Dublin, which he owns with his brother Mark and John Richardson called the shots as driver.

Having accumulated sufficient winnings to gain eligibility, he was entered in the Crock of Gold series, broadcasted and sponsored by the Welsh TV channel S4C. Dollar produced a scintillating run in the Heat held on August the 9th at Tir Prince Raceway, to qualify for the September Final held at the same track. Not only did he win amongst hardened and experienced company, but established a new track record of 1min56.2secs. in the process.

The Final also proved to be an epic affair. In heavy going the horse held pole, barrelled into the first turn and was the all the way winner in a fast clock of 1min58.1secs. considering the elements and state of the track. Everyone dreams of winning the Crock and journalist Eric Haughan from Ireland, in one account, described the winner of this race as “the Best of the Best”. It is arguable that Tir Prince has never witnessed such scenes after that race, with Dollar’s followers impervious to the teeming rain when participating in the celebrations.

If that wasn’t enough, the horse rounded off the season in style at the back end of September on home territory. He was convincing in yet another sub-two minute mile in the John Roche Memorial Pace, held at Annaghmore Raceway on the 25th of the month, winning in the fastest time of that day’s meeting in 1min55.7secs. Coming along the stretch his action can only best be described as “Poetry in Motion…”

On hartracks he broke the two minute barrier in each and every race he was entered in 2010 which only goes to reinforce and illustrate his consistence on such a surface.

Forafewdollarsmore had a fabulous season in 2010 and he was unrelenting in the pursuit of success for Walter, Carmel and Family…..
